There’s Always A Reason

This entry is a mix between 2D Rotoscope (where animated teen figures express suicidal thoughts through both sorrowful behavior and text alongside direct voiceover to hopefully connect with what other teens may be experiencing) and Live Action footage (where actor Ivory/Emma addresses and connects with the viewer as she draws to cope with her own suicidal thoughts, encouraging them to look forward to and see more value in all aspects of life regardless of their size ). Overall, the message we’ve tried to convey for those living with suicidal thoughts is that they deserve someone who has been overcoming similar experiences in order to create hope that things will get better for them just as it has for the other AND, as the title states, that there will always be at least one reason to keep going in life, and those reasons should be cherished.

This PSA features absolutely no portrayals of suicide attempts, death by suicide, weapons, statistics, discrimination of any kind, language directly encouraging suicide or language shaming those who live with suicidal thoughts. All art, footage, and editing was done by our three participants, the exception being the music tracks which were both produced by Kevin Macleod. At the end of the PSA is the required Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number 9-8-8 that can be called or texted at any time, any day.

The Quiet Between Us

Our film “The Quiet Between Us” is about recognizing warning signs that may go unnoticed. Through small changes of behavior and quiet moments, it shows how a friend can notice when something is wrong and chooses to speak up.

Suicide Prevention: How to Help A Friend Feeling Suicidal

My entry is centered around a student feeling suicidal. The film walks the viewer on how the friend of the student safely handles the situation. I worked with Thaily Bastidas and Leslie Leon to create this film. At the end, it provides resources for people who may be struggling withe thoughts of suicide.

There is hope

We made this video to show how people are struggling. We also made it to spread awareness and to have people know about this issue.

The Mask

This film’s goal is to show the perspective of someone with a friend in need to show how sometimes people put masks up to stop the pain and guilt of struggling with suicide or self-harm. It’s to show that even if your friend looks okay it doesn’t mean they actually are.

You matter

We created this video to make change. Tons of people have been and are still thinking about ending their life. But by the help of friends and family, we can give them hope. This video has a deep meaning about how taking action matters so much and we all have to try to help our friends and family that are going through this.

Oversaturated

Oversaturated is a short film centering on a young man who has been struggling against suicidal thoughts. Throughout the film, he is surrounded by bright, intense colors, representing the overwhelming negative emotions that can lead to someone considering suicide. Eventually, a friend notices his strange behavior, recognizing the signs that he may be planning to make a suicide attempt, and confronts him – asking if he is considering taking his own life. When he confirms, she comforts him, dulling the colors into a subtle glow – still there, but less all-consuming. She tells him that she understands how overwhelmed he is right now, and that she will be here to support him through it while opening a door to rest and recovery.

Directing Change PSA

Our submission relates to this category because it shows how a girl is afraid to reach out, so she only gives signs of taking her life. Ex: giving away valuable things. She then texts her friend, about to ask for help but she ends up saying never mind. Her friend finds this strange and reaches out to a Suicide Prevention Helpline. Although she couldn’t reach out herself, her friend did for her.

Before its too late

shows examples of suicidal warning signs and how they will look when represented through a friend or peer. In the PSA, we encourage anyone who sees someone representing these signs to immediately reach out and be direct

A helping hand

Our film is about a friend helping a friend, who she sees struggling, while noticing others don’t care and are not there for her.
